Ozlem Ugurlu is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at Saint Louis University's College of Arts and Sciences. She joined SLU in 2021 after positions at Palm Beach State College and Tulane University.
Education:
- Ph.D. in Mathematics, Tulane University
- M.Sc. in Mathematics, Dokuz Eylul University, Turkiye
- B.S. in Mathematics, Dokuz Eylul University, Turkiye
Her research centers on the deep interactions between Combinatorics, Representation Theory, and Algebraic Geometry. She specializes in symmetric spaces, Hessenberg varieties, Borel orbits, and clan combinatorics, with significant contributions to understanding the geometric and combinatorial structures of classical symmetric spaces. Her work frequently bridges abstract algebra with concrete combinatorial models.
Analysis of her publications reveals a consistent focus on combinatorial structures within algebraic geometry, particularly examining orbit closures, symmetric varieties, and their connections to lattice paths and Schubert calculus. Her most recent work extends into symplectic alternating algebras and Hessenberg varieties with semisimple operators.
Mentoring and Service:
- Primary advisor to Preetinder Kaur, Kieran Favazza, and Mahak Jauhri
- AWM Mentor Network mentor since 2022
- Co-organizer of AMS Fall 2025 Central Sectional Meeting
- Program Chair for MAA Missouri Section Meeting 2025
She actively participates in outreach through programs like STARS@SLU and Sonia Kovalevsky Day, while implementing innovative teaching practices including IBL and alternative grading systems as part of Green '23 Project NExT.
