Oviya Govindan is a Post-Doctoral Fellow in the Department of Anthropology at the College of Liberal Arts, The University of Texas at Austin. Her research focuses on environmental and economic anthropology, with specific interests in water, infrastructure, climate change, and political economy.
Her educational background includes:
- PhD in Anthropology from the University of California Irvine
- Integrated Masters in Development Studies from the Indian Institute of Technology Madras
Dr. Govindan's research examines how environmental changes, particularly sea-level rise and coastal infrastructure development in Chennai, India, reshape social and economic life. She employs ethnographic methods to study the interplay between labor, environment, and value in contexts of crisis. Her work bridges economic anthropology, environmental studies, and science and technology studies.
At UT Austin, she has taught courses including Cultural Anthropology (ANT 302), Economic Life and Cultures (ANT 324L), and Race, Caste, and Environment (ANT 324L) in multiple semesters.
