Osmer Balam is an Assistant Professor of Spanish at the College of Wooster. He holds a B.A. from the University of Belize, an M.A. in TESOL from Southern Illinois University-Carbondale, and a Ph.D. from the University of Florida. His research focuses on Hispanic Linguistics, TESOL, and sociolinguistic aspects of language contact, particularly in Central American and U.S. Latino communities. He teaches courses such as Spanish Phonology and Spanish and Spanglish in U.S. Media.
His work examines bilingual compound verbs, code-switching patterns, and sociolinguistic attitudes toward Spanglish and language contact. Key publications include analyses of Belizean Spanish verb constructions and co-edited volumes on Central American linguistic advancements. He advises independent studies exploring topics like Spanglish in literature, bilingual identity in Guatemala, and language policies in Latin America.
Dr. Balam has supervised over 10 student research projects, emphasizing experiential learning and community-focused studies. His research integrates theoretical frameworks with empirical fieldwork, often collaborating with international scholars. Current interests include the role of digital media in preserving endangered language varieties and the intersection of emotion and code-switching.
