Osman Asghar Mirza is an Associate Professor in the Department of Drug Design and Pharmacology at the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Copenhagen. His research focuses on understanding the interplay between (un)natural compounds and secondary active transporters involved in health and disease, with particular emphasis on human intestinal transporters that play crucial roles in nutrient and drug absorption.
Dr. Mirza's educational background includes:
- M.Sc. in Chemistry from the University of Copenhagen (1999)
- Ph.D. in Chemistry from the University of Copenhagen (2003)
His primary research interests center on human intestinal transporters and their role in nutrient and drug absorption, as well as their upregulated expression in cancers due to high metabolic activity. Dr. Mirza employs a range of experimental techniques including X-ray crystallography, functional assays, site-directed mutagenesis, biophysical analyses, and bioinformatics to investigate the structure and mechanism of these transporters. His work aims to leverage molecular understanding of transporters to improve both drug absorption and cancer therapy approaches.
Analysis of Dr. Mirza's recent publications reveals a strong focus on membrane transport proteins, particularly oligopeptide and multidrug transporters. His research spans multiple disciplines including biochemistry, molecular biology, pharmacology, and cancer research. Key themes include protein structure-function relationships, bacterial physiology, cancer therapeutics, and the development of computational and experimental approaches for studying transporter proteins.
Dr. Mirza has received several prestigious awards and honors throughout his career:
- Novo PhD Plus Prize (2002)
- Steno fellowship (2007)
- Sapere aude Research Group Leader (2010)
- Adjunct Faculty at NIBGE/PIEAS (Pakistan) (2012)
As an academic supervisor, Dr. Mirza has guided the research of numerous students and postdoctoral fellows. In 2013 alone, he supervised 6 MSc students, 2 PhD students, and 4 postdoctoral fellows. His research has been supported by significant funding from multiple sources:
- As main applicant: Alfred Benzon's Fond, Danish Council for Independent Research (Medical and Natural Sciences), Lundbeck Foundation, and Novo Nordisk Foundation
- As co-applicant: Copenhagen 2016, University of Copenhagen
Dr. Mirza is actively involved in the scientific community as a referee for prestigious journals including the EMBO Journal, Protein Science, and FEBS Journal. He also reviews academic proposals for international foundations and serves on internal and external MSc and PhD assessment committees.
