Oscar Pineda-Catalan is a Senior Lecturer at the University of Chicago’s Biological Sciences Collegiate Division, specializing in conservation biology with a focus on genetics and wildlife health of endangered species. He has spearheaded the redesign of the Core Biology curriculum to emphasize hands-on research and mentored projects, while co-founding the STEM-Out Mexico program in 2018 to train UChicago scientists in international outreach and mentor Mexican students.
Research and Curriculum Innovation: His work bridges conservation biology with STEM education, advocating for immersive, experiential learning. The STEM-Out Mexico program, funded by the Provost’s Global Faculty Awards, has trained 18 UChicago graduate students and postdocs in STEM communication through collaborations with Mexican co-instructors.
Impact of International Collaboration: Pineda-Catalan highlights how international partnerships have enriched his teaching methods and expanded educational equity, particularly by enabling remote participation for women facing travel constraints. His efforts underscore the value of global networks in fostering mentorship and collaborative science.
