Oscar Levin is an Associate Professor in the Department of Mathematical Sciences at the University of Northern Colorado, part of the College of Natural and Health Sciences. He holds a Ph.D. and M.A. in Mathematics from the University of Connecticut, and dual B.A./B.S. degrees in Philosophy and Mathematics from the University of Northern Colorado. His research focuses on computability theory, reverse mathematics, and effective algebra, particularly exploring the algorithmic aspects of algebraic structures and combinatorics. He is known for authoring the open-source textbook Discrete Mathematics: An Open Introduction, which supports undergraduate education globally.
Levin teaches courses ranging from Discrete Mathematics and Abstract Algebra to graduate-level Logic and Graph Theory. His work includes collaborations on computable planar graphs, prime labelings of infinite graphs, and the complexity of domatic partitions. He actively contributes to the open educational resources (OER) community and has presented at numerous academic conferences on topics such as reverse mathematics applications and paradoxes in cardinality puzzles.
His research bridges theoretical computer science and pure mathematics, addressing questions like the computational strength of graph matchings and the limitations of algorithmic solutions in infinite structures. Levin’s contributions span both foundational theoretical work and pedagogical innovation, reflecting his dual commitment to advancing knowledge and accessible education.
