Ortwin Hess

Professor Ortwin Hess holds the Leverhulme Chair in Metamaterials at Imperial College London and serves as Co-Director of the Centre for Plasmonics & Metamaterials. His pioneering research focuses on the theory of slow and stopped light in metamaterials, ultrafast spatio-temporal dynamics, and quantum fluctuations in nanophotonic systems.

Research explores:

• Active metamaterials and nano-plasmonics with optical gain
• Quantum nature of light-matter interactions at nanoscales
• Ultrafast nano-lasers and spatio-temporal light control

Develops advanced computational methods for high-performance simulation of complex photonic systems. Applications range from subwavelength focusing to quantum information processing.
