Orlando Gutierrez

Dr. Orlando Gutierrez is a Professor of Medicine and Epidemiology, and holds leadership roles including the Marie S. Ingalls Endowed Chair in Nephrology Leadership at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). He is the Director of the Division of Nephrology, Director of the Center for Clinical and Translational Science, and Senior Associate Dean for Clinical and Translational Research. His research focuses on mineral metabolism, kidney disease progression, and health disparities. He holds appointments in the School of Medicine and School of Public Health.

• Education: Doctor of Medicine from University of Toledo, Postgraduate Training at Massachusetts General Hospital (Residency and Fellowship).
• Leadership: Oversees multiple centers including the Nephrology Research & Training Center and Comprehensive Diabetes Center.
• Research Interests: Chronic kidney disease, acute kidney injury, phosphorus metabolism, and epidemiological studies on kidney health disparities.

His work emphasizes biomarker development for kidney disease progression, particularly in diabetic kidney disease. Recent studies highlight the role of tubular biomarkers like KIM-1, EGF, and MCP-1 in predicting outcomes. He has secured grants from NIH and industry partners, totaling over $50 million in funding. Dr. Gutierrez mentors numerous graduate students and leads interdisciplinary training programs.

Teaching activities include lectures on electrolyte disorders and chronic kidney disease epidemiology. He has served on over 20 dissertation committees, fostering the next generation of nephrology researchers.
