Orlando Gallo is a Junior Researcher holding a CEEC position at CIBIO-InBIO, University of Porto, Portugal, where he contributes to the ECOGEN research group. His work bridges molecular ecology and wildlife conservation, focusing on mammal carnivores in human-impacted landscapes across Europe, South America, and Africa.
His academic journey includes a PhD in Molecular Ecology from Universidad Nacional del Sur, Argentina (2015-2020), preceded by an MSc project on Italian wolf ecology and research technician experience in wolf-dog hybridization studies. His research trajectory demonstrates consistent specialization in carnivore conservation through progressively advanced methodological approaches.
Dr. Gallo's research interests span Conservation Biology, Wildlife Ecology, and Molecular Ecology, with particular expertise in Carnivore Conservation and Human-Wildlife Conflict mitigation. His current work employs cutting-edge molecular dietary analysis to resolve individual foraging behavior in wolves and African wild dogs, directly informing spatial conservation planning in human-dominated ecosystems.
As a member of the ECOGEN research group at CIBIO, he operates within Portugal's premier biodiversity research center, which provides advanced molecular facilities and international field networks. His recent postdoctoral work on the critically endangered Marsican bear demonstrates his capacity to address urgent conservation challenges for isolated populations through trophic resource management strategies.
