Orianne Smith serves as Professor of English and Affiliate Professor of Gender, Women’s and Sexuality Studies at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC). She has held extensive leadership roles since joining UMBC in 2005, including Chair of the English Department (2012-2018), Graduate Program Director (2018-2024), and currently Co-Chair of the 2025-2026 Middle States Accreditation Self-Study Steering Committee.
Her educational credentials include:
- Ph.D. in English, Loyola University Chicago
- B.A. in English, Bennington College
Dr. Smith's research centers on British Romanticism with pioneering work in gender dynamics, Gothic literature, and the intersections of religion, superstition, and magic during the long eighteenth century. Her scholarship reveals how female writers weaponized prophetic discourse and supernatural tropes to challenge patriarchal structures. She examines millenarianism not as marginal belief but as central to women's literary authority during revolutionary periods, particularly through figures like Mary Robinson and Charlotte Smith.
Analysis of her recent publications shows sustained engagement with creolized narratives, periodical culture, and the politics of female prophecy. Her work consistently bridges literary analysis with postcolonial and feminist frameworks, demonstrating how witchcraft tropes served as vehicles for racial and gender critique in Romantic-era texts.
Her scholarly impact is recognized through:
- First Book Award from the British Association of Romantic Studies (2015) for Romantic Women Writers, Revolution and Prophecy: Rebellious Daughters, 1786-1826
As an educator, Dr. Smith cultivates collaborative classrooms where students explore literary texts' historical contexts and contemporary resonances. Her university service reflects deep commitment to institutional transformation through roles including Faculty Senate President (2020-2022) and Special Assistant to the Provost for Special Faculty Initiatives (2020-2024), where she developed policies advancing academic excellence and faculty development.
