Oommen Varghese is an Associate Professor and University Lecturer at the Department of Chemistry, Ångström Laboratory at Uppsala University, specializing in Macromolecular Chemistry. He serves as a group leader at the Translational Chemical Biology laboratory, a position he has held since 2011. His research program focuses on the intersection of synthetic organic chemistry, cell and molecular biology, and preclinical research for translational medicine.
Dr. Varghese's research spans multiple disciplines with a primary focus on:
- Biomaterial science, particularly hyaluronic acid-based hydrogels
- Regenerative medicine, with emphasis on bone tissue engineering
- Nucleic acids therapeutics, including engineered plasmid DNA, siRNA, and microRNA
- Drug delivery systems for clinical translation
- Stem cell research and synthetic biology applications
His recent publications demonstrate significant innovation in 3D bioprinting of dynamic hydrogels, crosslinking chemistry for enhanced material properties, and the development of nucleic acid delivery systems that address major bottlenecks in clinical translation. His work bridges fundamental chemistry with practical medical applications, particularly in tissue engineering, neural regeneration, and cancer therapy.
Dr. Varghese leads an interdisciplinary research team comprising PhD students, postdocs, and master's students with exceptional skills in both cell biology and synthetic chemistry. His laboratory maintains state-of-the-art facilities for organic synthesis as well as cell and molecular biology research, enabling a truly translational approach to chemical biology. The research group actively collaborates across disciplines, as evidenced by the diverse authorship on publications, and continues to recruit ambitious researchers interested in science at the chemistry-biology-medicine interface.
