Onur Güntürkün is a Professor of Biopsychology at Ruhr University Bochum's Faculty of Psychology. A cognitive and comparative neuroscientist, he investigates fundamental questions about brain evolution and function across species including pigeons, humans, dolphins, and crocodiles. His multidisciplinary approach integrates field work, single-cell recordings, and ultrahigh-field brain imaging to study how diverse neural architectures produce cognition and why brains develop asymmetrical organization.
His research examines:
- Evolutionary mechanisms of brain asymmetry
- Cross-species cognitive processes
- Neural basis of perception and behavior
- Comparative neuroanatomy
- System-level neural coding
Güntürkün directs a large international laboratory employing diverse methodologies from electrophysiology to fMRI. His career includes extended research periods in Australia, Turkey, Belgium, and South Africa through sabbatical placements. Recognized with prestigious honors including honorary doctorates, he serves in the German National Academy of Sciences and received major awards for both scientific achievement and science communication.
