Onno Bouwmeester is a Professor in Consulting and Business Ethics at Durham University Business School (since 2023) and holds the title of Associate Professor at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam's School of Business and Economics, where he also directs the VU Knowledge Hub for Consulting and PSF. He earned MSc degrees in Philosophy (1993) and Economics (1994) from the University of Amsterdam, followed by a PhD in Business Administration from Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (2008). His research focuses on management consulting, business ethics, and rhetorical analysis, with notable works exploring ethical transgressions, consultant-client dynamics, and moral leadership. He has authored three monographs and pioneered jokes-based research methods to study unethical business behavior.
Teaching includes coordinating the MSc Management Consulting program and courses on strategy evaluation, business ethics, and qualitative research writing. He has supervised three PhD theses and co-authored publications with master students. Ancillary roles include editorial board memberships at the Management Consulting Journal and Journal of Management Inquiry, plus advisory roles with professional organizations like the Orde van Organisatie Adviseurs (OOA).
Research interests span management consulting ethics, rhetorical strategies in policy debates, and the psychological dimensions of consulting work. His work contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goals through studies on sustainable practices and organizational change. Notable awards include the Benedictine University Outstanding Paper on Ethical Issues in Management Consulting (2010).
Current projects include studies on food waste management and IT consultancy in digitalization. Bouwmeester’s interdisciplinary approach integrates philosophy, economics, and organizational behavior to address complex decision-making challenges in business and public policy.
