Onan Demirel is Assistant Professor of Mechanical Engineering at Oregon State University, directing the Design Engineering Lab. His NSF-funded research develops human-centered design frameworks integrating digital modeling, ergonomics, and systems engineering.
Research creates computational methods for early-stage product evaluation, including digital human modeling for vision obstruction analysis (automotive/F1), human-in-the-loop simulations, and generative design approaches. Current projects assess driver visibility using virtual reality and Bayesian optimization.
- Best Paper Award in ASME IDETC-CIE (2019)
- Multiple OSU MIME Strategic Excellence Awards
- Purdue Teaching Academy Award
Leads NSF project 'Educating Designers For Generative Engineering' ($2.18M). PhD students develop design automation for safety-critical systems including aviation emergencies and medical devices.
