Dr. Omar Kassab is a Lecturer at the Department of Environmental Systems Science, ETH Zürich. He joined ETH Sustainability in December 2012 and has since held key roles in institutional projects and initiatives. His work emphasizes sustainability reporting and coordination of interdisciplinary programs.
Education:
- Bachelor's degree in Political Science from TU Darmstadt
- Master's degree in Comparative and International Studies (MACIS) from ETH Zurich and the University of Zurich
- Doctoral degree (Dr. sc. ETH) in impact evaluation focused on higher education research
Research Interests and Activities: Omar's research integrates environmental systems science with higher education policy evaluation. He coordinates the public lecture series The UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) in Context and collaborates with ETH4D and D-USYS. His work bridges sustainability frameworks with real-world applications, particularly in institutional reporting and educational impact analysis.
Awards: The Sustainability Report of ETH Zurich, which Omar managed as Project Manager since 2014, received the Swiss Ethics Prize in 2018. This project highlighted his expertise in sustainability metrics and institutional accountability.
Advancing Initiatives: Omar advises on student initiatives and commissions related to sustainability and refugee support. He co-founded the NGO Syrian Refugee Crisis, focusing on psychosocial treatment for war-traumatized Syrian refugee children in Jordan. His career includes roles at the German Foreign Office in Nepal, the Friedrich Ebert Foundation in East Jerusalem, and the Competence Center for Environment and Sustainability (CCES).
Labs and Teams: He actively participates in ETH Sustainability and collaborates with the Department of Humanities, Social and Political Sciences (D-GESS) through his prior affiliation with the Professorship for Social Psychology and Research on Higher Education.
