Oluwaseyi Balogun is an Associate Professor at Northwestern University, holding dual appointments in the departments of Civil and Environmental Engineering and Mechanical Engineering. He leads the Balogun Research Group, focusing on elastic wave propagation, thermal transport, and biomechanics of soft materials. His research employs advanced optical and scanning probe techniques, combined with continuum modeling, to study material properties and energy transport mechanisms.
Prof. Balogun holds a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from Boston University, following M.S. and B.S. degrees from Boston University and the University of Lagos, respectively. His work integrates experimental and computational methods to address challenges in materials science and engineering.
Research interests include nanoscale thermal transport, phononic structures, and biofilm mechanics. Key achievements include developing optical coherence elastography (OCE) for biofilm characterization and pioneering studies on grain boundary thermal resistance in thermoelectric materials. He has authored over 50 publications in top journals like Advanced Materials and ACS Nano.
Prof. Balogun teaches courses in engineering analysis, dynamics, and material deformation. He is affiliated with the Theoretical and Applied Mechanics Graduate Program and has received the BU Technology Commercialization Institute Award (2004). Current research includes collaborations on phononic metamaterials and thermal management in electronic devices.
