Dr. Olly Akkerman is a Lecturer and Research Associate at the Institute of Islamic Studies, Freie Universität Berlin since 2016. He holds a PhD from the Berlin Graduate School Muslim Cultures and Societies (2015) and an MPhil in Arabic and Islamic Studies from Leiden University. His research focuses on manuscript cultures of the Islamic world, new methodologies in philology, and the social and material history of Shi’i communities, particularly the Ismā’īlī Bohras. He explores topics like the Bohra Dark Archive, Fatimid legacy in Gujarat, and the social life of texts in Muslim societies.
His teaching interests include codicology, paleography, and the intellectual history of Shi’ism. Recent publications analyze Indian Ocean trade networks and manuscript circulation between Yemen and India, as well as the intersection of philology with communal identity. He actively participates in workshops on social codicology and the entangled histories of the Bengal-to-Balkans region.
Affiliated with the Berlin Graduate School and Department of History, his work bridges historical and contemporary perspectives on Islamic manuscript cultures, emphasizing their role in preserving identity and knowledge.
