Olle Westerlund is a Professor in the Department of Economics at Umeå School of Business, Economics and Statistics (USBE), Umeå University. His research focuses on regional economics, labor markets, migration patterns, and human capital dynamics. He examines topics such as urban wage premiums, spatial sorting of talent, effects of adult education on labor market outcomes, and the interplay between marital status and health risks like dementia.
Key research areas include geographical labor mobility, regional disparities in earnings, and policy impacts on education and retirement. He has contributed to understanding the role of high school performance and family background in regional graduate distribution. Recent work explores Stockholm's high-productivity regions and long-term income trajectories shaped by initial labor market conditions.
Westerlund is affiliated with the Economic Policy Network and has led projects analyzing life trajectories in labor markets and health domains (2017–2021). His interdisciplinary work integrates demographic, spatial, and policy perspectives, with over 50 peer-reviewed publications since the 1980s.
