Nantes-Atlantic National Veterinary, Food and Agro-Food Schoolمعرفی
Olivier Hamant is an INRAE Research Director at the Plant Reproduction and Development laboratory (UMR ENS de Lyon / Claude Bernard Lyon 1 University / INRAE / Inria / CNRS), leading research on plant morphogenesis through mechanical and biochemical signal integration. His interdisciplinary approach bridges biology, physics, and computational modeling to understand how plants acquire their shapes.
Hamant earned his doctorate in 2002 from INRA Versailles and VIB Ghent, demonstrating ethylene's impact on developmental gene activity. After postdoctoral fellowships at VIB Ghent (Marie Curie grant) and University of California, Berkeley, he joined INRA in 2007 at École Normale Supérieure in Lyon.
His research focuses on mechanical feedback mechanisms in plant growth, investigating how cells sense and respond to mechanical constraints, how cellular heterogeneities contribute to tissue formation, and how these processes lead to reproducible organ shapes. Hamant combines molecular genetics, micromechanics, and advanced imaging to unravel mechanical signaling pathways across multiple scales.
Hamant's work has established fundamental principles about mechanical signal integration from cell wall mechanics to tissue-level organization, with implications extending beyond plant science to cellular signaling, self-sensing, and growth robustness. His research program includes developing innovative techniques like a high-throughput single-cell system with synthetic cell wall frameworks of controllable geometry.
- INRAE Young Researcher Laurier (2012)
- ERC Consolidator Grant (2013)
- ERC Advanced Grant for MUSIX project (2020)
- Foulon Prize from Academy of Sciences (2020)
As a research leader, Hamant directs international projects including the MUSIX project on multiscale mechanical signaling and a Franco-Polish project on cellular heterogeneity in morphogenesis. He has established collaborations with researchers across Europe and the United States. Hamant also contributes to science communication, writing for the public and teaching interdisciplinary courses. His team includes Charlotte Kirchhelle, who joined with an ERC Starting Grant for the EDGE-CAM project on edge-based mechanisms coordinating cell wall assembly.
