Olivier Blight is a Lecturer-Researcher at the Mediterranean Institute of Biodiversity and Ecology (IMBE) within Avignon Université. His research focuses on the impacts of environmental change on arthropod populations, restoration ecology in agroecosystems, and invasive species dynamics. He currently coordinates the scientific component of an EU-backed action plan targeting the invasive electric ant (Wasmannia auropunctata), detected in France in 2023.
His work emphasizes arthropods' roles as ecosystem engineers and their application in ecological restoration. Blight’s career stems from childhood fascination with social insects, particularly ants, deepened through academic internships starting at the undergraduate level. He advises aspiring researchers on the challenges of academic careers, including precarious employment and potential geographic mobility.
Blight’s fieldwork often involves close-quarters observation, exemplified by his current focus on the 1.5mm electric ant. His research aligns with IMBE’s broader mission to study Mediterranean biodiversity origins and functions.
