Oliver P. Rafferty, S.J., is a Professor of History at Boston College. As a Jesuit priest, he has taught at multiple universities in Britain, Ireland, the United States, Korea, and Australia. He holds advanced degrees including a D.Phil from Oxford University. His research focuses on Irish Christianity, British/Irish church-state relations, revolutionary violence, and Catholic history. He has served as an examiner for doctoral and master’s programs at institutions such as Oxford, Trinity College Dublin, and the University of Western Australia.
His academic contributions include seven authored/edited books and numerous articles. Notable works include Violence, Politics and Catholicism in Ireland (2016) and entries in the Oxford Dictionary of the Christian Church (2022). His recent publications analyze papal politics, Irish nationalism, and legal frameworks of the Catholic Church in Ireland.
Rafferty’s career spans over three decades, blending teaching, research, and scholarly reviewing. His work bridges historical analysis with religious studies, emphasizing the intersection of faith, politics, and societal structures in Ireland and beyond.
