Dr. Oliver Niebuhr is an Associate Professor at the University of Southern Denmark (SDU), affiliated with the Center for Industrial Electronics (CIE) and the Department of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering in Sønderborg. He leads the acoustics laboratory and is a leading researcher in speech prosody, acoustic charisma, and phonetic communication. He is an Executive Member of the Permanent Council of the International Phonetic Association (IPA) (2016–2023), and serves as Associate Editor for both Phonetica and the Journal of the International Phonetic Association (JIPA).
His research focuses on speech melody, prosody, and the acoustic foundations of charismatic communication. Notably, he developed Acoustic Voice Profiling and the PICSA algorithm, which led to the spin-off company AllGoodSpeakers ApS. His interdisciplinary work spans phonetics, digital speech processing, human-machine interaction, and rhetorical communication, with applications in business, education, and technology. He has held guest positions at universities including Erlangen-Nuremberg, Prague, and Stuttgart, and previously led the Research Center for Voice & Emotion at Kiel University.
His recent publications explore charismatic speech in public figures like Steve Jobs, prosody in hate speech, virtual reality training for public speaking, and the impact of vocal cues on perception in human-computer interaction. His research combines empirical phonetic analysis with practical applications in training and technology.
Dr. Niebuhr has received the BHJ Innovation Prize in 2018 for his work on Acoustic Voice Profiling. He is actively involved in editorial boards and international academic service. He advises on speech technology and communication training, including through the podcast "Stimmt! Die Sprechviertelstunde" and the platform charismatischer.de.
He leads several research projects, including work on human-machine interaction, hate speech perception, phonetically inspired industrial sound design, and prosodic training. His lab collaborates internationally and applies phonetic insights to real-world problems in communication, leadership, and technology.
