Oliver Müller

Oliver Müller serves as Heisenberg Professor of Philosophy at the University of Freiburg's Department of Philosophy. He holds concurrent appointments as Senior Fellow at the Freiburg Institute for Advanced Studies (FRIAS) within the 'Responsible AI' research group and as Responsible Investigator in the Cluster of Excellence livMatS. Since 2012, he has been a Principal Investigator in the Cluster of Excellence BrainLinks-BrainTools.

His academic background includes an M.A. in Philosophy and German Literature from Heidelberg, Hamburg, Venice, and Humboldt University Berlin, followed by a 2005 PhD from Humboldt University on Hans Blumenberg’s phenomenological anthropology. He completed his Habilitation at the University of Freiburg in 2012, published as 'Selbst, Welt und Technik' (2014).

Müller's research critically examines how AI, bio-/neurotechnologies, and digital systems reshape human cognition and behavior through phenomenological, hermeneutical, and normative ethical frameworks. Current investigations focus on hybrid agencies in autonomous weapons, trust dynamics in human-robot interactions, and temporal transformations in digital societies, reflecting his commitment to responsible innovation.

Research funding encompasses BMBF-supported projects on bio/neuroethics, BrainLinks-BrainTools cluster leadership, and livMatS cluster responsibilities. He initiated and directs 'Nexus Experiments', a science-art platform fostering public dialogue on technology ethics through participatory projects and events.

This initiative demonstrates his interdisciplinary approach to translating philosophical inquiry into societal engagement, particularly regarding autonomous systems and digital transformation.
