Oliver Gao is the Director of the Cornell Systems Engineering and Howard Simpson Professor of Engineering at Cornell University. He specializes in urban infrastructure, transportation, and health systems analytics, focusing on smart communities, low-carbon transportation, and human-centered urban design.
- Education: B.S. in Civil Engineering and Environmental Science (Tsinghua University, 1996), M.S. in Civil Engineering (Tsinghua University, 1999), M.S. in Statistics and Agriculture and Resource Economics (UC Davis, 2004), Ph.D. in Civil Engineering (UC Davis, 2004)
Gao's research spans urban technology, data science, complex systems modeling, and computational sustainability. He develops integrated models for smart city infrastructure, air quality monitoring, and low-emission transportation solutions, emphasizing public health outcomes and policy impacts.
His recent publications focus on PM2.5 exposure from wildfires, health impacts of electric vehicles, and air pollution mitigation through urban design. These works highlight interdisciplinary applications of data science, environmental modeling, and health risk assessment.
- Scientific Awards: James and Mary Tien Excellence in Teaching Award (2010), UC Transportation Center Ph.D. Dissertation Award (2004), NSF Future Engineering Education Scholars (2002)
Gao leads the Center for Transportation, Environment, and Community Health (CTECH), where he pioneered the Cornell University Post-Processing Software for air quality management. He previously served as Editor-in-Chief of Transportation Research Part D and worked as a quantitative analyst at TRG Management LP.
