Oliver Bunk

Dr. Oliver Bunk heads the Laboratory for Macromolecules and Bioimaging (LSB) at the Paul Scherrer Institute and serves as Deputy Head of the Center for Photon Science. His research focuses on cross-disciplinary imaging techniques spanning condensed matter physics, biomedical science, and materials characterization.

Education includes a doctorate in physics from the University of Hamburg, with prior industrial and postdoctoral experience at Risø National Laboratory. Research integrates X-ray methods with computational approaches:

• Nanoscale 3D imaging via ptychography and tomography
• Structural analysis of biological tissues and biomaterials
• Detector development for synchrotron applications
• Phase-contrast techniques for soft matter characterization

Recent publications emphasize cancer tissue analysis, collagen nanostructures, synchrotron instrumentation, and radiation therapy characterization. Collaborative works frequently address multiscale material properties using advanced X-ray methods.

Dr. Bunk serves on scientific advisory committees for international facilities including ESRF, PETRA IV, and NSRRC. He actively contributes to PhD supervision and academic committees at PSI.
