Olga Haldey serves as Associate Professor and Division Coordinator of Musicology & Ethnomusicology within the College of Arts and Humanities at the University of Maryland, College Park. Appointed in Fall 2006, she is based at the Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center and has established herself as a leading scholar in Russian music studies through sustained research and academic leadership.
Her research centers on Russian music after 1800, with concentrated expertise in opera, Igor Stravinsky's compositions, and interdisciplinary connections between music, literature, and visual arts. Dr. Haldey investigates early modernist philosophy, music criticism frameworks, and the cultural contexts of Russian musical theater, employing methodologies that bridge historical analysis and aesthetic theory to illuminate broader artistic movements.
Dr. Haldey's scholarly trajectory, anchored by her monograph Mamontov’s Private Opera (2010), demonstrates consistent engagement with Russian musical modernism. Current projects analyzing Stravinsky's Les Noces sketches and adaptations of Bulgakov's The Master and Margarita extend this focus into contemporary artistic reinterpretations, revealing evolving scholarly approaches to Russian cultural identity.
Her research excellence is recognized through significant honors:
- Alvin H. Johnson AMS-50 dissertation award
- National Endowment for the Humanities Fellowship
- Paul Sacher Stiftung Fellowship
Dr. Haldey has secured substantial external funding from national and international bodies to support archival research and publication initiatives. As Division Coordinator, she provides academic mentorship within the Musicology & Ethnomusicology program while directing strategic development of the division's research profile and curriculum.
