Olga Gershenson is Professor of Judaic and Near Eastern Studies and Film Studies at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, with adjunct appointments in Film Studies.
Her research explores cultural representations in cinema and public spaces, with emphasis on Holocaust films, Israeli/Palestinian cinema, and gendered dimensions of public infrastructure. Seminal work includes analysis of Holocaust films from the Soviet Union and foundational studies in toilet culture as sites of gendered contestation.
Publications include studies of Russian-Israeli cultural production and museum representations of Jewish heritage in post-communist Europe. She is currently editing The Handbook of Judaism and Film for Oxford University Press.
Teaching: Offers courses on Israeli/Palestinian cinemas, Holocaust films, Jewish humor, and Russian-Jewish culture. She has taught internationally in Israel, China, India, Russia, and UAE.
