Dr Olga Cara is an Associate Professor in the Sociology of Education at the UCL Institute of Education (IOE), part of the Faculty of Education and Society. She holds a PhD in Sociology from UCL and has over 15 years of experience in sociological research and education. Her work focuses on ethnicity, language, and education systems, with particular emphasis on migrant and ethnic minority communities. She leads the Social Research MRes programme, emphasizing research design and interdisciplinary approaches.
Her research explores identity production in educational contexts, family literacy programmes, and ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) outcomes. Notable projects include a Bell Foundation-funded study on EAL (English as an Additional Language) learners in further education and the Family Skills project evaluating literacy initiatives. She has published extensively on topics such as racial microaggressions in teacher education and the impact of family literacy programs.
Dr Cara teaches modules on mixed methods research and ethnicity in education, supervising PhD students in sociology and education. She is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (2017) and has contributed to policy briefings on education equity and employability for minority groups. Her work aligns with UN Sustainable Development Goals 4 (Quality Education), 3 (Good Health), and 10 (Reduced Inequalities).
