Dr. Olena Petrenko is a Lecturer for special tasks at the Department of Eastern European History, Ruhr-Universität Bochum. She completed her PhD (2009–2012) under a doctoral scholarship at the Research School of RUB. Her research focuses on gender, nationalism, and post-Soviet Ukrainian history, with a particular emphasis on the roles of women in resistance movements and historical memory.
Education: PhD in Eastern European History from Ruhr-Universität Bochum (2012), with fellowships at DHI Moscow/Warsaw and the Petro Jacyk Visiting Scholar program at the University of Toronto (2010).
Research Interests: Gender dynamics in conflict, Ukrainian nationalism (OUN/UPA), Soviet resistance, post-war Sovietization, and historical narratives of identity. Her work often bridges gender studies with political and military history, exploring how women’s roles have been marginalized or mythologized in nationalist movements.
Notable Publications: Includes studies on the Euromaidan protests, Soviet-era literary propaganda against Ukrainian women, and analyses of women’s agency in the Ukrainian Insurgent Army. Her work appears in journals like Osteuropa and East/West: Journal of Ukrainian Studies.
