Olena Gruzieva is a Principal Researcher and Docent at the Institute of Environmental Medicine, Karolinska Institutet, Sweden. She leads the research group 'Urban environment and children's and youth health' and serves as PI of the EMIL study. Her work focuses on the respiratory and cardiometabolic effects of environmental exposures like air pollution, transportation noise, and residential greenness, primarily using birth cohorts BAMSE and EMIL with international collaborations through ESCAPE, PACE, MeDALL, and EXPANSE consortia.
- Academic Titles: Principal Researcher (2023-), Associate Professor (2021), Assistant Professor (2018-2022), Postdoc (2013-2016), PhD (2012), MSc (2007), MD (2006)
- Key Collaborations: Karolinska Institutet, Region Stockholm, European consortia (ESCAPE, PACE, MeDALL, EXPANSE)
Her research integrates epigenetics, transcriptomics, and proteomics to uncover biological mechanisms linking environmental exposures to childhood asthma, allergies, and cardiometabolic disorders. Current projects examine biomarker interactions with pollution, noise, and greenness across 14 European cohorts.
Recent grants include funding from the Swedish Research Council for Environment, Agricultural Sciences and Spatial Planning (2024-2025), Swedish Research Council for Health, Working Life and Welfare (2023-2029), and multiple other Swedish Research Council awards (2021-2024). She supervises PhD students Shizhen He (main, 2024), Maura Kere (co, 2021), and postdocs Cornelia Santoso and Zhebin Yu.
