Oleg Lavrentovich is Trustees Research Professor at Kent State University's Liquid Crystal Institute, with expertise in soft condensed matter physics. His research explores liquid crystal phenomena including topological defects, colloidal interactions, and electro-optic effects. Lavrentovich developed novel characterization techniques like fluorescence confocal polarizing microscopy for 3D director field mapping.
Recent work focuses on ferroelectric nematics, active matter in liquid crystals, and nanostructured materials for optical applications. He has made significant contributions to understanding defect dynamics, colloidal transport in anisotropic fluids, and electrohydrodynamic effects in liquid crystals.
Lavrentovich has published over 200 papers advancing fundamental knowledge of soft matter systems while developing applications in displays, biosensing, and tunable photonics. His group maintains active collaborations with researchers worldwide to explore emergent phenomena in complex fluids.
