Ola Olsson is a Professor of Economics and Head of the Department of Economics at the University of Gothenburg's School of Business, Economics and Law. His research focuses on long-run economic development, political economy, the economics of conflict, and economic growth. He holds a PhD from the University of Gothenburg (2000), supervised by Douglas A. Hibbs Jr., and has held academic positions since 2000, progressing from Assistant to Full Professor.
Education: M.A. in Economics and Political Science (1996), PhD in Economics (2000), both from the University of Gothenburg. Research interests include prehistoric economic development, state formation, climate impacts on societies, and institutional evolution. He has supervised numerous PhD students and secured major grants, including from the Swedish Research Council and SIDA.
Research highlights include studies on Neolithic cultural divergence, the political economy of conflict in regions like Darfur and the Congo, and the long-run impacts of historical institutions. He has authored over 50 journal articles and the textbook Essentials of Advanced Macroeconomic Theory (2013). His recent work, Paleoeconomics, explores the co-evolution of human societies with environmental and institutional factors from prehistory to state formation.
Grants and roles include editorial board memberships for journals like European Journal of Political Economy and involvement in policy projects for organizations like the World Bank. His work bridges macroeconomics, development, and historical analysis, emphasizing deep determinants of economic outcomes.
