Ockert Meyer serves as a Lecturer in Theology and Preaching at North Parramatta United Theological College, part of Charles Sturt University's School of Theology. With extensive experience in both academic and ministerial roles, he brings practical insights to his teaching across multiple theology courses including Christian Worship, Practical Theology, Triune God, Sacramental Theology, Homiletics, Theological Hermeneutics, Studies in Liturgy and Worship, and Issues in Practical Theology.
Dr. Meyer's educational background includes BA, BTh, ThL, MTh, and DTh degrees. He studied theology at the University of Stellenbosch and completed post-graduate studies in South Africa and the Netherlands. His doctoral thesis was titled "Between Silence and Ecstasy: The spirituality of KH Miskotte in the Context of Mysticism and Charismatic spirituality."
Dr. Meyer's research focuses on the theological dynamics of preaching, reformed theology, hermeneutics (particularly Jewish theology as a hermeneutical lens), and the intersection of art and theology. His work demonstrates a consistent engagement with homiletics, exploring how preaching functions within contemporary religious contexts while drawing from historical theological resources.
His scholarly output reveals a trajectory moving from explorations of artistic figures like Leonard Cohen toward increasingly focused studies on preaching methodology, Jewish-Christian theological dialogue, and engagement with theological figures like Bonhoeffer. Recent work shows particular interest in how preaching can address contemporary challenges including grief, cultural shifts, and interfaith understanding.
Dr. Meyer has been the founding editor of a preaching aid lectionary series (with Ian Nell), published multiple books and academic papers, and supervised numerous doctoral students. His supervisory work has covered diverse topics including the Pentecostal imagination and retrieval of history, Rolf De Heer and Dietrich Bonhoeffer.
With an international background having served as a minister for the Dutch Reformed Church in Cape Town and at various Uniting churches in Sydney and Canberra, Dr. Meyer brings a global perspective to his academic work. His service in multiple church contexts informs his practical theological approach to teaching and research.
