Dr. Obinna Onuaguluchi is a Researcher in the Department of Civil Engineering at the University of British Columbia (UBC), affiliated with the Faculty of Applied Science. His role involves advancing sustainable construction materials through innovative research. He holds a Ph.D. from Eastern Mediterranean University (2012) and has been with UBC since 2014 as a postdoctoral fellow and later as a Research Associate.
His research focuses on material sustainability, particularly the utilization of waste materials (e.g., copper tailings, scrap tires, cellulose) in cement composites. Key areas include long-term durability of cement-based materials, alkali silica reactivity mitigation, and smart repair solutions. Collaborations with industrial partners drive applied research on eco-friendly construction practices.
Publications highlight advancements in nanofibrillated cellulose (NFC) for repair mortars, acid corrosion resistance, and the valorization of industrial byproducts. His work emphasizes reducing construction’s carbon footprint through recycled materials and durable designs.
Dr. Onuaguluchi has contributed to over 30 peer-reviewed articles and conference proceedings, focusing on topics like fiber-reinforced composites, environmental impact assessments, and structural health monitoring. His research bridges academic innovation with real-world applications in sustainable infrastructure.
