O. Thompson Mefford

Dr. O. Thompson Mefford is an Associate Professor in the School of Material Science and Engineering at Clemson University, leading the Mefford Research Group. His research focuses on developing stable polymer-metal oxide nanoparticle complexes for biomedical, environmental, and energy applications, including hyperthermia, drug delivery systems, and MRI contrast agents. He holds a BS from Clemson University (2003) and a PhD in Macromolecular Science and Engineering from Virginia Tech (2007), followed by postdoctoral research at Ohio State University. Dr. Mefford’s expertise spans magnetic nanoparticle synthesis, surface functionalization, and collaborative work across disciplines such as biology and chemical engineering.

His research interests include magnetic nanoparticles for biomedical applications, polymer science, and environmental remediation. Notable achievements include the Virginia Tech Graduate Man of the Year Award (2007) and mentoring students like Arabella Hunter, who won the 2025 MRS/OPTICA poster competition.
