Nyle E. Fort is an Assistant Professor of African American and African Diaspora Studies at Columbia University. His research focuses on liberation, social movements, and the intersection of religion, ethics, and politics. He is affiliated with the Department of African American and African Diaspora Studies within the School of Arts and Sciences.
Education includes a Ph.D. in Religion and Interdisciplinary Humanities from Princeton University, an M.Div. from Princeton Theological Seminary, and a B.A. from Morehouse College.
His work explores how marginalized communities resist oppression and build collective resilience. Current projects include Spirit of Struggle and Amazing Grief, examining the role of spirit and mourning in multiracial freedom movements. His scholarship has been funded by institutions like the Ford Foundation and the Woodrow Wilson Foundation.
Publications appear in The Guardian, Harvard Journal of African American Public Policy, and There’s a Revolution Outside, My Love: Letters from a Crisis. He actively engages in activism and ministerial work, emphasizing community-building and social justice.
