Nur Ahmad is a PhD candidate at Leiden University's Institute for Area Studies and a lecturer at Walisongo State Islamic University's Faculty of Ushuluddin. His research centers on Islamic-Mystical discourse in Javanese mystical manuscripts written in Pegon script, with a focus on 19th-century Quranic exegesis by Kiai Shaleh Darat.
His educational background includes:
- Master's in Theology and Religious Studies from Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (2016-2017)

- Islamic Boarding School training at Al-Itqon Bugen (2003-2006) and al-Bahraniyyah Ngemplak (2009)
His research explores the cultural and intellectual factors behind mystical Quranic interpretations in Java, analyzing how Kiai Shaleh Darat's work harmonized Islamic law (shariah) with mystical traditions (tasawwuf) within Javanese religious context. He examines under-researched Pegon-script manuscripts to reveal 19th-century Javanese religiosity through socio-intellectual historical methods.
Scientific recognition includes:
- MoRA scholarship for Master's studies (Ministry of Religious Affairs, Indonesia, 2016)
- English for Academic Purposes grant (Ministry of Religious Affairs, Indonesia, 2015)
As an educator, he teaches Islam in Java, Pegon Manuscript studies, and Quranic Interpretation at Walisongo State Islamic University while conducting doctoral research under Prof. Nico Kaptein and Prof. Bernard Arps. His work bridges classical Islamic scholarship with Javanese mystical traditions through analysis of suluk literature and intellectual networks between Java and Mecca.
