Dr. Nuala O'Connell is a Consultant Microbiologist at the Health Services Executive and serves as an Adjunct Clinical Lecturer at the University of Limerick. She holds medical degrees from NUIG, an MSc in Clinical Microbiology from QMW College, University of London, and an MD from the University of Warwick. Her research focuses on healthcare-associated infections, antimicrobial resistance, and diagnostic methodologies.
Her research interests include prosthetic joint infections, biofilm formation in clinical settings, and antimicrobial resistance patterns. She has published extensively on microbial epidemiology, infection prevention practices, and outbreak management in healthcare settings.
Dr. O'Connell has authored numerous publications on topics including SARS-CoV-2 transmission dynamics, carbapenemase-producing organisms, and diagnostic approaches for meningitis/encephalitis. Her work contributes significantly to clinical microbiology practice and infection control protocols.
She maintains an active clinical practice at University Hospital Limerick while contributing to academic medicine through her adjunct position at UL. Her work bridges clinical microbiology practice with translational research in infection prevention.
