Nora Segar

Nora Segar, MD MPH, is a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Medicine at Yale School of Medicine and Director of Palliative Medicine at the Saint Raphael Campus of Yale New Haven Hospital. She received her medical degree from the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and completed residency and chief residency at the Yale Primary Care Program, followed by a palliative medicine fellowship at Northwestern University. Her clinical practice focuses on improving care for patients with serious illnesses, with a particular emphasis on primary palliative care education and family dynamics in end-of-life care.

Research Interests: Dr. Segar’s work centers on enhancing palliative care delivery through innovative educational curricula and interdisciplinary collaboration. Her research explores cultural and ethical challenges in end-of-life care, the role of poetry and art in patient care, and policy issues affecting healthcare access for vulnerable populations. She has co-developed a required palliative care curriculum for internal medicine residents and published widely on topics such as family communication in terminal illness and the impact of visitor restrictions on patient outcomes.

Collaborations: She frequently collaborates with researchers Dana Cavallo, Jeanette Tetrault, and Stephen Holt on projects addressing addiction recovery, palliative care ethics, and medical humanities.

Leadership: As Director of Palliative Medicine, she oversees initiatives to integrate palliative care into acute and primary care settings, advocating for patient-centered approaches to serious illness.
