Nora Honkala is Lecturer in Law at the University of Reading School of Law and Deputy Director of Postgraduate Research. Her research employs feminist and socio-legal approaches to examine forced marriage asylum claims, gendered inequalities in legal systems, and intersectional vulnerabilities in refugee protection.
She co-convenes the Gender, Sexuality and Law Stream at the Socio-Legal Studies Association Annual Conference and maintains affiliations with WiRL (Women in Refugee Law Network) and Refugee Law Initiative. Scholarship includes critical analyses of UK asylum tribunals and the privatization of gender-based violence in legal proceedings.
Research emphases:
- Gendered construction of political opinion grounds in asylum
- Evidentiary barriers for gender-based claims
- Legal epistemologies of forced marriage
Education includes a PhD from Reading (2015) on forced marriage in asylum law, LLM from Reading, and LLB from University of Melbourne. Previous positions include lectureships at City, University of London and Henley Business School.
