Noora Ellonen is a Professor at Tampere University, affiliated with the Department of Criminology and Criminal Policy within the Faculty of Social Sciences. Her research focuses on child and youth victimization, juvenile delinquency, criminal policy, and the impact of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) on long-term outcomes. She employs mixed-methods approaches, including quantitative analysis of register data and qualitative exploration of online behavior in crisis contexts.
Key areas of study include: 1) Trauma effects and violent offending among adolescents, 2) Cross-cultural comparisons of child maltreatment, 3) Policy evaluation for victim support systems, and 4) Digital communication patterns in crisis situations like wartime. Her work bridges sociological, psychological, and criminological perspectives.
Recent trends in her publications emphasize global crises (e.g., Ukrainian adolescents in conflict zones), methodological innovations in self-report surveys, and the intersection of social media with workplace dynamics. Notable contributions include longitudinal birth cohort analyses spanning decades, revealing evolving patterns of victimization and recidivism.
Dr. Ellonen collaborates with child welfare organizations and law enforcement agencies to translate research into actionable policies. She currently oversees research projects funded by the Finnish Ministry of Justice and EU Horizon programs. Her work is disseminated through high-impact journals like Journal of Quantitative Criminology and the newly established Criminology Journal.
