Noor Zaidi, Assistant Professor at the Department of History, College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences, University of Maryland, Baltimore County, is a scholar of the Middle East and South Asia specializing in gender history, sectarianism, and Shi'a Islam in national and transnational contexts.
Her research explores how transnational narratives of seventh-century figure Zaynab bint Ali became embedded in local contexts, including pilgrimage sites in Syria and Pakistan and prisons in Iraq as sites of memory and identity construction. This work has been supported by fellowships and grants from the Gerda Henkel Foundation, SSRC, Middle East Center at the University of Pennsylvania, Dresher Center for the Humanities, and UMBC’s Office of Research and Creative Achievement. Most recently, she received a National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) yearlong fellowship to complete her book project, Translations of Zaynab: Gender, Sectarianism, and Citizenship in Shi’a Islam.
Prof. Zaidi teaches courses on the Modern Middle East, Islamic empires, Islamic movements, and topics such as 'Hindus, Muslims, and their Others' and 'Women, Gender, and Islam.' She advocates for underrepresented voices in historical scholarship and aims to expand course offerings based on her regional and thematic expertise.
