Nomy Arpaly is a Professor of Philosophy at Brown University, affiliated with the College of Arts and Sciences. She holds a PhD from Stanford University (1998) and a BA from Tel Aviv University (1992). Her research focuses on ethics, moral psychology, action theory, free will, and normative ethics, emphasizing the interplay between desire and moral agency. She has authored influential books such as In Praise of Desire (with Timothy Schroeder) and Unprincipled Virtue.
Her work explores moral worth, rationality, and compatibilism, with recent projects addressing moral ignorance and non-Kantian/utilitarian ethics. Awards include a Harvard University fellowship and recognition for her paper Moral Worth. She teaches courses on moral theories, free will, and agency, and is affiliated with the American Philosophical Association.
