Nolen Gertz is an Associate Professor of Applied Philosophy at the University of Twente, specializing in applied ethics, social and political philosophy, phenomenology, existentialism, and aesthetics. He serves as Coordinator of the 4TU Task Force on Risk, Safety and Security and a Research Associate in Military Ethics at the Inamori International Center for Ethics and Excellence (Case Western Reserve University). His work bridges philosophy with contemporary issues such as military robotics, social media ethics, and AI governance.
He holds a PhD in Philosophy from The New School for Social Research (2012), with a dissertation critiquing Just War Theory. His books Nihilism and Technology (2018) and Nihilism (2019) explore how Nietzschean nihilism mediates technological design and human values. His research has been featured in The Atlantic, The Washington Post, and by media outlets like the BBC and Philosophie Magazine.
Recent publications analyze techno-moral scenarios, existential ethics in design, and climate activism legitimacy. His work interrogates the dual role of technology in mediating autonomy (e.g., Facebook’s emotional manipulation) and reshaping political life (e.g., Zoom’s societal impact during pandemics).
He actively collaborates with scholars like Deniz Ozkaramanli and Susan Cammers-Goodwin, contributing to journals such as Design Issues, Techné, and Research Ethics. His interdisciplinary approach connects philosophy with military ethics, digital humanities, and policy analysis.
