His research focuses on AMO (Atomic, Molecular, and Optical) physics, particularly the long-range interactions between Rydberg atoms. This work lies at the intersection of quantum mechanics and optical physics, contributing to foundational understanding of atomic behavior in ultracold environments.
Nolan teaches a range of physics courses, including Physics 101 (Elements of Physics) for non-science majors, Physics 123 (Physics of Life Sciences I), and core engineering mechanics and electromagnetism courses such as Physics 133 (Mechanics) and Physics 134 (Electricity and Magnetism). His advanced course offerings include Physics 301 (Optics), reflecting his expertise in optical physics.
