Noella Gray is an Associate Professor in the Department of Geography, Environment and Geomatics at the University of Guelph, and Coordinator of the Graduate College of Social & Applied Human Sciences. She holds a PhD from Duke University (2009) and focuses on the politics of conservation and environmental governance, particularly how science informs policy and the socio-political dynamics of marine conservation. Her work explores co-management frameworks, volunteer tourism impacts, and global agreements like the Convention on Biological Diversity.
Her research interests include political ecology, marine protected areas (MPAs), ocean governance, and the 'blue economy.' Key projects involve studying global conservation governance through Collaborative Event Ethnography and the Conservation through Reconciliation Partnership. She has examined MPAs in Belize, the Phoenix Islands Protected Area, and other island contexts.
Dr. Gray teaches courses on environmental policy, development, and local resource management. Her recent publications address large-scale MPAs, equity in oceans governance, and the intersections of conservation with climate change and extractive industries. She actively supervises graduate students researching topics like Indigenous-led conservation, island sustainability, and marine spatial planning.
Her advisory work includes guiding research on Indigenous Knowledge Systems, intersections of international policy, and ethical research practices. She collaborates internationally on initiatives like the Human Dimensions of Large Marine Protected Areas project and the Nature.Culture.Politics research group.
