Dr. Nina Jones is a Professor and Canada Research Chair in the Department of Molecular and Cellular Biology at the University of Guelph, where she has been a faculty member since 2006. She holds a B.Sc. in Molecular Biology and Genetics from the University of Guelph, a Ph.D. in Medical Biophysics from the University of Toronto, and completed postdoctoral training at the Lunenfeld Tanenbaum Research Institute under Dr. Tony Pawson.
Her research focuses on signal transduction pathways, particularly their roles in kidney function, cancer biology, embryonic development, and nervous system patterning. She employs interdisciplinary methods, including mouse genetics, cell culture, microscopy, and clinical specimen analysis. Key areas of study include kidney podocyte morphology, focal adhesion dynamics in cancer cells, and neuronal adaptor proteins like ShcD.
Dr. Jones has been recognized with awards such as the Guelph Researcher Award and election to the College of Scholars. Her lab includes postdoctoral fellows, graduate students, and research associates. She teaches courses in genetics and molecular biology, including MBG*3050, MBG*4070, and MCB*6310.
Her work has led to grants and collaborations, including a $750,000 grant for kidney disease research. The lab’s future directions include investigating novel gene mutations in kidney diseases and tumor cell invasion mechanisms.
