Prof. Nils Norman is a Professor at the Münchner Akademie der Bildenden Künste (AdBK Munich) since 2022, previously leading the School of Walls and Space at the Royal Danish Academy of Art and Design in Copenhagen (2007–2019). His work spans sculpture, public art, architecture, urban planning, and ecological systems, focusing on challenging conventional urban design and advocating for utopian alternatives. He has executed major public projects including pedestrian bridges, playgrounds, and museum collaborations worldwide.
Teaching emphasizes student-led learning through initiatives like the Optimus Prime Mobile Kitchen (a collaborative cargo bike project) and a campus forest garden integrating permaculture practices. Weekly student presentations and small support groups structure the learning environment. Norman’s pedagogy prioritizes self-organization, practical collaboration, and critical engagement with urban and ecological themes.
His research explores the intersection of art, play, and public space, with notable projects in Blackpool, Cambridge, and collaborations with institutions like Tate Modern and Creative Time. The class’s outdoor garden and mushroom-growing courses exemplify its commitment to sustainability and hands-on education.
