Prof. Dr. Nikolaus Korber is a faculty member at the Institute of Inorganic Chemistry, University of Regensburg, holding a C3 Professorship since 1998. His research focuses on the chemistry of homo- and heteroatomic cluster anions in anhydrous liquid ammonia. Key areas include the synthesis, functionalization, and structural characterization of Zintl ions (e.g., Sb₅⁵⁻, As₆⁴⁻, Si₉⁴⁻, PbSe₃⁴⁻) through low-temperature reactions and X-ray crystallography.
His group investigates metallates, carbonylates (e.g., homoleptic/heteroleptic complexes), and ammoniates—solvate crystals that decompose at low temperatures (e.g., −20 °C). Collaborations with Dr. Stefanie Gärtner’s group (alkali metal thallides/indides) and Dr. Michael Bodensteiner’s team (single-crystal X-ray analysis) are central to his work.
Recent activities highlight presentations at international conferences like the 20th International Symposium on Silicon Chemistry (ISOS-20, Hiroshima 2024) and the 58th Hemdsärmelkolloquium (Innsbruck 2025). Students like Paul Braun (functionalized silicon clusters) and Michael Witzmann (Zintl chemistry) have received poster prizes, including NZ$300 and €50 awards.
