Prof. Nikolaus Ernsting is a retired faculty member at Humboldt Universität zu Berlin, where he held a position in the Institut für Chemie within the Mathematisch-Naturwissenschaftliche Fakultät. His research focuses on ultrafast spectroscopy, particularly femtosecond transient absorption and fluorescence techniques, applied to photoreceptors and molecular dynamics. He pioneered methods like broadband fluorescence upconversion spectroscopy (FLUPS), advancing studies of excited-state dynamics in organic and biomolecular systems. His work includes investigations of stilbene photochemistry, solvation dynamics in ionic liquids, and DNA-protein interactions.
Key contributions span femtosecond stimulated Raman spectroscopy, with studies on β-carotene, flavins, and azobenzene derivatives. Retired since September 2016, he remains active in promoting FLUPS and collaborative research. Contact: nernst@chemie.hu-berlin.de.
